about

Excellent new album from Scandinavian indie rockers Svankropp

The Swedish-Norwegian quartet Svankropp have always been somewhat different. Uncompromising. Sometimes polarizing, sometimes extremely lovable. Always interesting.

Their new album «Gabriel» fits right into this. Dark, introvert, parts sleazy, parts classy, parts unknown. There's some obvious dark side of the 80s stuff going on, played through a indie rock filter. Sometimes slick, other times raucous. The band claim to be inspired by David Bowie, Joy Division and Prince and while this shows, there’s more to the puzzle.
"Gabriel" is an album that marries the rough and the dark with the lush, dreamy and glamorous.

Andy & Hallvard from the band: "After the release of our 2016 debut album, we felt the need to brake things down to what we originally were. Our debut is very much a studio album were we used overdubs and other advantages you have in the studio to the full. But what are we, if you brake it down to the core? We're a 4 piece rock band, and we wanted to keep it at that. Clean and simple, with the melody in forefront.

Even more so than our debut, we've worked with the songs on Gabriel together. We've all been part of the creative process in making the music. The lyrics have been mainly Emilie and Andys turf, but this time also Axel contributed, as he also sings on several of the tracks on the album. We hope this feeling of a strong collective effort it will shine through the songs and the record as a whole!

Lyrically, theres a few different themes we explore on the album. We have the focus of nature more directly written into tracks like Crocodiles and Hyenas. Doomsday and the end of the world the way we know it in the opening The End and The Rapture. And of course, we can't escape the themes of love in High and Run to the Ballroom. These are big and somewhat general subjects, we know, but why spoil the fun and over-explain things? The listening experience is a subjective one, that's what makes it so beautiful.

We wouldn't say it's a concept album, but the title track, Gabriel, is kind of a red thread that ties the songs somewhat together. You get the human aspect into all these big themes about forces of nature, doomsday and love. It makes it relatable and recognizable, which is important to us since we know we somewhat can drift on to another planet sometimes...it's a nice planet though, come visit sometime!

There's obvious biblical referances in Gabriel for sure. We prefer the dramatic over the sober, and while we don't interact particulary with religion that much, religious symbolism are undoubtfully powerful. We draw inspiration from that, and bend it into our own universe.

Now, lets cut to the chase. We hope you enjoy the album, and that it help you give you some nice moments through the Autumn and hopefully, into forever! We want to thank Petter Haugen Andersen and Gustav Davidsson for invaluable help recording our album. Your patience and skills are truly admirable!

Love, Svankropp"
